HOW TO BRING YOUR HAIR BACK FROM THE DEAD

By Seth Ramirez – April 29, 2021

TThe pandemic has affected everyone in so many ways, your hair being a major one. You may have even tried to cut corners and color your hair at home during the past year. Home hair color can do some damage to your hair if not used properly. And, as you know, color treated hair always needs extra attention if you’re wanting the color and style to last a long time and stay healthy.

But now that things are getting a little closer to normal, we thought we would lay out some tips for keeping your hair color looking as fabulous as it should. Nothing is worse than spending big bucks at your hair salon for the perfect hair color and then having it fade after a week. Here are a few simple and FREE ways to keep your hair healthy and your color lasting longer!

1. Wait three days before shampooing.

When coloring hair, your cuticle layer is opened and making it easy for color to penetrate the hair shaft. When you wash your hair too soon after, the cuticle layer could still be open which then leads to your color to be washed out. It takes up to three days for the cuticle layer to fully close. The longer you wait to clean your hair, the more time the color pigment will have to soak into the hair cuticle.

2. Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.

Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are types of detergent that are found in many personal care products. Sulfates are used to create a bubble-forming effect to your shampoos and conditioners. The downside is, you may end up stripping your hair of its natural oils and moisture. This can cause your new hair color to fade prematurely.

3. Use cold water when shampooing.

Heat causes your hair’s cuticle to open and allows your color to wash out while shampooing and conditioning. By shampooing with slightly warm water, then rinsing with cold water after conditioning you can save your color. The warmer water will allow the shampoo and conditioner to penetrate your scalp and cleanse. The cold water will help seal in the moisture from your conditioner and prevent color from fading by sealing the hair’s cuticle layer.

4. Avoid daily washing.

If you wash your hair daily you are not only washing away the natural oils and moisture, but you also wash away a little bit of your hair color every time you wash your hair. Find a comfortable level of washing your hair like every other day or even 2-3 times a week. You can shower after the gym and even get your hair wet, just don’t scrub away the moisture and color.

    5. Use leave-in conditioners.

A really good leave-in treatment will protect hair color when heat styling and long days in the sun. Colored and chemically treated hair needs extra hydration and protection from the sun’s UV rays and heat to prevent damage and loss of nutrients to the hair.

    6. Use soft water and avoid chlorinated pools.

Minerals and metals found in hard water can get stuck in between the cuticle layer of your hair and won’t allow hair color to penetrate properly. Chlorine is a very strong mineral and will deposit on your hair causing it to show a greenish cast. This will cause all kinds of problems with the condition and texture of your hair, not to mention make it nearly impossible to color properly
